Bringing an Established Offline Retail Experience Into Ecommerce

The Requirement

Sankalp Bandhej is a long-established brand with years of presence in the industry and a strong offline retail identity.

Unlike a new D2C brand trying to establish how it should look, Sankalp already had a recognisable aesthetic, customer experience and way of presenting its collections through its physical store.

The challenge was to carry that familiarity online.

The website needed to feel like the same Sankalp customers already knew offline, rather than a separate ecommerce interpretation of the brand.

The requirement was therefore to create a new online store that could:

  • reflect the aesthetic of the physical retail space;
  • maintain the brand’s established visual identity;
  • present collections with a more premium and considered feel;
  • translate offline merchandising into digital browsing;
  • make products easier to discover online;
  • create a responsive shopping experience without losing the character of the brand.

Our Role

We worked across the ecommerce experience from structure and UX through Shopify development.

Our scope included:

  • understanding the existing offline brand and store aesthetic;
  • translating physical retail cues into a digital design language;
  • UI and UX design;
  • Shopify development;
  • collection and product structure;
  • navigation and discovery planning;
  • product and collection page design;
  • visual merchandising;
  • responsive implementation;
  • QA and launch support.

Rather than starting with generic ecommerce references, a major part of our process was understanding what already made the Sankalp experience recognisable and deciding how those elements should carry into the website.

The Solution

We approached the website as a digital extension of the physical store.

The objective was not to modernise the brand so aggressively that existing customers no longer recognised it. Instead, the ecommerce experience needed to retain the visual character and familiarity of the offline business while making it work naturally on a screen.

Translating the Offline Aesthetic

The visual language of the physical store became an important reference point for the digital experience.

Elements such as:

  • overall visual tone;
  • product presentation;
  • use of imagery;
  • spacing and composition;
  • collection merchandising;
  • brand detailing;

were considered while designing the storefront.

This helped create continuity between someone who had experienced Sankalp offline and someone encountering the brand through the website.

Bringing Collection Merchandising Online

Physical stores naturally guide customers through products using displays, groupings and visual merchandising.

Online, those cues have to be recreated through:

  • navigation;
  • collections;
  • merchandising blocks;
  • product imagery;
  • category hierarchy.

We structured the store so customers could move through the range without the website becoming a flat grid of products.

The broader journey becomes:

Discover Collection → Explore Styles → View Product → Understand Details → Purchase

Balancing Heritage With Ecommerce Usability

Keeping the established aesthetic did not mean copying the physical store literally.

Digital shopping still requires clarity around:

  • navigation;
  • product information;
  • purchase actions;
  • mobile behaviour;
  • collection discovery.

The challenge was therefore to preserve the brand’s character while making sure the interface still behaved like a modern ecommerce experience.

Operational Outcome

The new store gave Sankalp Bandhej an online presence that feels more closely connected to the brand customers experience offline.

It provides:

  • stronger continuity between physical and digital retail;
  • a storefront aligned with the brand’s established aesthetic;
  • clearer collection and product discovery;
  • a more considered presentation of the range;
  • responsive shopping across desktop and mobile;
  • an ecommerce experience that strengthens rather than replaces the existing brand identity.

The result is a website designed around a simple principle: an established offline brand should not have to reinvent itself to sell online. Its digital experience should make the same brand feel just as recognisable on a screen.
